Effective Ways to Improve Yoga Practice

Although yoga is generally safe and suitable for everyone, it is important to keep in mind that everyone’s bodies are different, and there are therefore different limits to how far we can all stretch and bend. It might also be helpful to set your goal not on achieving a perfectly executed yoga pose, but rather to strive for a balanced integration of the mind, body, and breath. Here are a few tips in how to improve yoga practice.

Respect your own limits. Not everyone will be able to bend as far and with the same measure of comfort and capability. Go slowly and find out how far you can bend before attempting more complex or difficult yoga poses. Don’t attempt to do exactly what you see others do. Instead, try to stay within your comfort range while trying to perform poses to the best of your ability.

Maintain your smile. A good way to determine whether or not you are doing it right is by figuring out at which point you lose your smile. This is the first thing that goes when the yoga practitioner overextends himself. You should remain comfortable at all times; if not, an adjustment of your body may be necessary.

Remember to breathe. Always maintain proper breathing no matter what you do. Deep long breaths called ujjayi are important to the practice of yoga, helping you to maintain a relaxed state even as you perform specific yoga poses. Focusing on your breath will also help you stretch further than you would normally be able to do.

Practice yoga with respect. Yoga is so much more than just about physical maneuvers. It is an activity that is steeped in tradition and spiritual component, and as such, should be practiced accordingly.

Adopt the proper attitude. Effective yoga practice involves adopting the proper attitude of focusing inwards. This is best achieved by employing breathing rhythms that help to bring together the mind and body. Practicing yoga in this manner will help you gain the maximum benefit from your practice.

Observe how your body functions. Throughout your yoga practice, it is essential to observe how your body works and how it behaves in reaction to specific poses. Pay particular attention to which hand or foot you prefer when performing specific movements, or which side of your body you tend to favor.

Practice meditation. Meditation is one of the most important aspects of yoga. Yoga asanas will help you better prepare yourself for the process of meditation, which will in turn help you achieve a more advanced practice.

Make yoga a way of life. Finally, strive to incorporate yoga into your daily life. Always be aware of your body’s movements and limitations, and learn to adapt your movement and breathing to your body’s needs and capabilities. In this way, you will come closer to integrating yoga into your overall life, and gain the maximum benefits that it can provide in terms of mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
